๐ŸGoat Simulator, ๐Ÿ Apple Archive, and more

Itโ€™s Memon Mondays!

This newsletter is my experiment to share all the cool things I find during the week and share them with my like-minded friends. Letโ€™s get started.

Clean Code JavaScript โ€” A guide to producing readable, reusable, and refactorable software in JavaScript.

You probably already know this: I made a little iOS app to run OCR on all photos on the phone and make them searchable. It also got featured on HN.

GAME OF THE WEEK

Have you played Goat Simulator? You (a goat), are free to explore the game's open world and jump, run, bash things, and lick objects. The map is packed with tons of jokes and bugs that should be seen rather than talked about. FYI, itโ€™s free this January on Playstation Plus!

This article by Dan Abramov โ€” Itโ€™s about how obsessing with โ€œclean codeโ€ and removing duplication is a phase many of us go through. When we first learn abstraction, it is tempting to get high on that ability, and pull abstractions out of thin air whenever we see repetitive code.

But this โ€œrefactoringโ€ is not always the right way to go. Read more.

The album came out SEVENTEEN YEARS AGO !!! ๐Ÿ˜Ÿ

โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”

TIP OF THE WEEK: window.element trick

Usually; in JavaScript, to get an element by ID you would do:

document.getElementById('example')

But there is a shorter way:

This behavior is called โ€œNamed access on the Window objectโ€. It was originally added by Internet Explorer and eventually was implemented by all other browsers simply for compatibility with sites that are dependent on this behavior.

Have you noticed how our computers are getting fast but our software is getting slower?

Itโ€™s fine if a program runs at 1% or even 0.01% of the possible performance. Everybody just seems to be ok with it. People are often even proud about how inefficient it is, as in โ€œwhy should we worry, computers are fast enoughโ€. This article talks more about this and is very on point!

Fart Attack, State of JS '19 and more

Hey friends, itโ€™s Memon Mondays! A bit late this time as I am traveling. I will keep this one short. Did you really think I will break the streak?!

Memon Mondays is my new experiment. A weekly email for my friends with things I found or learned that week about programming, memes, tech, Pakistan, and games. Itโ€™s very silly, but I will continue doing it!

Have you heard of the Bloomberg Terminal? Basically, itโ€™s still the place a lot of traders, analysts, and executives prefer to do their work. And because so many of the movers and shakers are already there, if you want to be the next big thing in finance, you want to be there, too. Youโ€™re not going to win the Super Bowl if you arenโ€™t even playing in the right stadium. Itโ€™s a billion-dollar software which has complete monopoly of that particular industry.

Itโ€™s a case study on how good software + specialized domain is a killer combination which most of us developers just avoid as it seems boring work.

Check out State of JS 2019. Itโ€™s the annual JavaScript survey to know whatโ€™s the new cool and whatโ€™s dying.

Speaking of JS Frameworks, have you tried Svelte? Itโ€™s the hot new minimal framework for building user interfaces. Whereas traditional frameworks like React and Vue do the bulk of their work in the browser, Svelte shifts that work into a compile step that happens when you build your app.

If you want to try Svelte, there are many ways to do it. You can also use Zero (my framework :D, will speak more about this later) to quickly get started with Svelte.
