The Soviet Web This is a tale of how the USSR almost invented their own internet. Imagine: a world where there were two internets and some countries used that instead of the current TCP/IP kind of stack. A protocol completely different and incompatible with the current system. And countries like China and India (and then Pakistan) used that instead. An east and a west internet. Only way to reach the other internet would be to go through a gateway somewhere. The competing protocols would have resulted in a performance race too on which one is technically superior. It would have been a cool alternate world to live in, although with its own problems.
