It is as if you were doing work

Working from home? (are you really?) You probably feel apathetic and unproductive! You miss clicking buttons! You miss waiting for progress bars! You miss checkboxes! You miss work! Use this handy application and it is as if you were doing work!

For me, it’s a representation of how most of our real work is a hamster-wheel kind of a deal.

In Defense of Bad Ideas

The article talks about why bad ideas, really bad ones are important. It’s so easy to sound wise about how the idea was bad or good after you have the benefit of seeing the results. But it’s good to encourage all ideas, especially the β€œbad” ones. If nothing else, they add color to the world and inspire others to think in new ways. Don't Be A Free User

This discusses the danger of operating (and being a user of) a free service. If the unit economics don’t work out the service is bound to fail by either:

1) not being popular enough and developer losing interest
2) or being so popular that developers β€˜exit’ by either selling out or shutting down as it’s no more feasible.

In both cases, the service is usually shut down.

Hamming, You and Your Research

This talk is about thinking; more specifically, a style of thinking by which great ideas are conceived. This is a long video but totally worth watching. I go back to it from time to time and it continues to inspire.

If I summarize the talk: Don't be a drunken sailor that aimlessly wanders from one topic to the other 2) There are millions of competitions out there, pick one, and become the best. It's an excellent talk.

Here is a transcript if you prefer reading and there is also a new book about it.
